Chicago has made national news due to the level of youth violence in our city. Yet this dialogue rarely includes the unique ways that girls experience violence. The Taskforce believes that it is important to draw attention to girls’ experiences of teen dating violence, sexual assault, street harassment and more, as well as to how these issues intersect with other issues girls are facing. We believe that only by raising the level of public dialogue and outcry over violence against girls will we convince policymakers to prioritize these issues.
In 2011, the Taskforce will issue a Media Toolkit to inform members of the press about the complex and important issue of violence against girls.
We are seeking volunteers who want to be part of this project, to compile information, identify media outlets, and help disseminate the toolkit. We are committed to including the voices of young women, and welcome programs that engage young women as leaders to be part of this effort.
